Historic Pictures & Paintings 2026

Just when we thought there were no more historic pictures of the bone mill, on 11/10/26 a new picture was discovered along with several of the river and Maltings on the Mid Norfolk Picture Archive. Thanks to Phyl Edees for the original pictures, John Filowiat for sharing and Jan Foster-Bartlett for finding them.

Jonathan Neville of Norfolk Mills has enhanced and colourised some of the photos, so all historic pictures have been brought together here, with links to the original pages containing more information. Our two paintings are also included on this page.

The first 3 pictures are the latest discovery showing the dis-used mill, with enhanced, colourised, and original sepia versions. A laminated print of this has now been put on display in our visitor centre along with the original historic photos.

The next 4 pictures show enhanced and colourised versions of the two pictures we already had of the mill in its working days. The following picture shows the mill being dismantled, then enhanced and colourised photos of Airmen swimming in the upper lock in 1917 which we were given in 2022.

The remaining 3 sepia photos are part of the recently discovered collection and show lighters (small barges) and horses at The Maltings, a lighter along the river, and the river near the village.

The 2017 painting of the mill building by Roy Didwell is a clever mix of old and new. Everyone involved with the mill has a copy and one is on display in the visitor centre.

The next picture shows a painting of the old water wheel which Annie Bird gave us at Mills Weekend 2026, the artist is Brian Woods of Fakenham. The painting is on display in our visitor centre.

We found sunken barges similar to those in the photos at two of our work parties in May 2017 just downstream from the mill, and June 2017 near the maltings. We recovered pieces of wood from them, shown in the last picture.
